New York artist Alexis Rockman, who created the visual concept art for the film “Life of Phi , will have a show of original gouaches of the ‘tiger vision’ underwater images at Carolina Nitsch Project Room in Chelsea. These Bioluminescence drawings visualize deep sea creatures and imagine their interaction within the ocean’s eco system; they appear to capture real time observation as well as the light and color as it stands out against the black paper which acts as alternate for the ocean depths.
They are trippy and beautiful and strike a fine balance between natural history and conceptual art.
April 1-30 at Carolina Nitsch Projectroom, 534 west 22nd street. Opens march 31, 6-8
